A TEACHER at Musanga in the Zambezi region has been left homeless when his house burnt down on Thursday as a result of lightning.
The region has been receiving heavy rains over the past few days, causing flash floods around Katima Mulilo.
Mafale Mundia on Sunday said he was at work at around 15h00 on Thursday when he received a call informing him that his house was on fire.
He said it is suspected that lightning struck a nearby tree, and that its branches fell on the electricity cables supplying his mud house with power, causing a blaze.
“The fire started at my electricity box and spread to the rest of the house. I have lost all my possessions, which cost me over N$90 000, and all my documents. I have to start all over again,” he said.
Mundia said he is currently staying with his cousin in town, while trying to figure out how to recover from the disaster.
Simon Dirkse, the deputy director of the Namibia Meteorological Service, last week said preliminary rainfall predictions indicate that good rains are expected across the country for 2022.
He said rainfall since the beginning of the year has been confined to the north-eastern areas of the country, including the Zambezi, Kavango East and West, and Otjozondjupa regions
The service is expecting rainfall to spread to the rest of the country this week.
