Literature discussion with three formidable authors

What do a former politician/freedom fighter, a book development activist and an anthropologist /archaeologist have in common? They all have a life time of stories to to tell about their journeys through their respective autobiographies.

Libertina Amathila, Jane Katjavivi and Beatrice Sandelowsky are three of five female Namibian authors who will talk about their autobiographies when the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) invites guests for its next literature discussion forum on Saturday, 12 October 2013.

In a special English edition of its regular French literature discussion forum, ‘Invitation à la Lecture’, the FNCC will look at autobiographies by Namibian women. This ‘Invitation à la Lecture’ in English will look at the emergence of autobiographies by women as a distinct genre within Namibian literature

The authors Libertina Amathila (‘Making a Difference’, Unam Press, 2012), Jane Katjavivi (‘Undisciplined Heart’, Tigereye Publishing, 2010), Ellen Namhila (‘Price of Freedom’, New Namibia Books, 1997), Lydia Shakatange (‘Walking the Boeing 707’, Footprint series, AARCLS, 2008) and Beatrice Sandelowsky (‘Archaeologically Yours’, Namibian Scientific Society, 2004) will be a part of the discussion.

So far, Amathila, Katjavivi and Sandelowsky have confirmed their attendance of the event. Amathila’s autobiography ‘Making a Difference’ is a Namibian bestseller, having sold 1500 copies in the first year of publication, and is in the process of being reprinted.

This event is a unique opportunity for academics, students and the general public to learn more about Namibian history of the past 50 years through amazing life stories.

Demasius Publications will have a book stall at the event to sell the autobiographies under discussion.

‘Invitation à la Lecture: Autobiographies by Namibian Women’ takes place on Saturday 12 October at 10h00. The venue is the FNCC Cinema. Entrance is free.
