Local actors are mourning the death of veteran Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as ‘Mr Ibu’, who died at the age of 62 on Saturday.
Actor, screenwriter and visionary film-maker Jackson Nghinamhito, popularly known as Jacky Pop, says God has used the life and work of Mr Ibu to have an impact on him and millions around the world.
“He was a very talented and funny actor and his kind is rare. He is one of the legendary actors I grew up watching, who has inspired me to pursue my acting career. When I think of the Nigerian film industry, it’s Mr Ibu who comes to mind,” he says.
Jacky Pop says his favourite movie starring Mr Ibu is ‘Mr Ibu in London’.
“Let there be courage and peace in his family and the entire Nigerian film industry during this time of mourning. Legends never die.” he says.
Comedian and film-maker Ngosi Makaza, known as Tap the Guy, says as a child he always admired comedic actors like Mr Ibu and Mr Bean, who have inspired comedians to expand their stand-up comedy acts to film.
“His passing is very painful and we must celebrate his life by enjoying the masterpieces he gave us throughout the years,” he says.
Actor Edward Shihepo, known as Silver Bantuan, says Mr Ibu’s death came as a shock.
“As a young Namibian male actor he was not only an inspiration, but a beacon of light,” he says.
Bantuan says growing up at Eenhana he always enjoyed watching Mr Ibu’s movies and remembers getting in trouble at home for watching television at the neighbour’s house.
“I find it hard to accept he’s gone for good. I will always cherish him for the role he played in my life, as well as other established and aspiring African actors.”
Bantuan extended his heartfelt condolences to Nigeria, Mr Ibu’s family and friends.
