‘Make holidays safe and enjoyable for children’

As the festive season approaches, ensuring the well-being of children and young people during the holidays becomes essential for parents and guardians.

Experts say the school break provides an opportunity for rest, fun, and personal growth – but it also comes with the responsibility of keeping children safe and engaged.

SOS Children’s Villages Namibia national director Julieta Ferreira shared key tips on how families can create safe, meaningful and enjoyable holiday experiences.

Ferreira emphasised that holidays should be a time of connection and positive experiences.

She stated that the festive season is a valuable time to strengthen family bonds through meaningful activities.

“Simple things like cooking together, storytelling or going on nature walks can create lasting memories,” she said.

Spending quality time together builds emotional security and helps children feel loved and supported.

While fun is important, safety should remain a top priority. Ferreira advises families to take extra precautions during outdoor and social activities.

“Make sure children know basic safety rules, such as road and water safety, and always have a trusted adult nearby. For young people exploring independence, provide guidance on staying safe and reachable,” She suggests setting boundaries and maintaining open communication, so young people feel supported while developing responsibility.

The holidays are also an excellent time to nurture life skills through fun, educational activities. “Encourage young people to take part in community service, learn new skills or explore creative interests like arts and crafts. This keeps them engaged while building confidence and responsibility,” Ferreira said.

Activities like volunteering or helping out at home teach children the value of giving back and contributing positively to society.

Maintaining a flexible daily routine is also helpful. While children need time to relax and unwind, having some structure around meals, rest and screen time ensures a balanced holiday experience.

Finally, Ferreira encourages parents and guardians to create a supportive environment where children feel safe expressing their feelings.

“Be open to listening and understanding what your children are going through. A caring and supportive environment helps them feel secure, even during challenging times,” she said.

With thoughtful planning and a focus on safety, fun and personal development, families can ensure the holidays are both enjoyable and enriching, helping children and young people return to school refreshed and ready for success.
