Man accused of killing baby with panga

A baby girl aged one year and three months was allegedly killed with a panga by her father at a village in the Oshana region on Saturday.

The incident took place at Ondulu nOmongwa, a village in the Oshana region, the Namibian Police announced on Sunday.

Oshana police spokesperson chief inspector Thomas Aiyambo said the suspect, who is an Angolan national, and the child’s mother were asleep
when the suspect allegedly woke up at around 23h00, shouting: “A lion and hyena are coming.”

The child’s mother and other people tried to calm him down, but he began to fight them.

“He slapped one of them and proceeded to take a stick and started beating them, and in the process also hitting the baby, who was in her mother’s arms and fell on the ground,” Aiyambo reported.

“The mother of the deceased ran away with two other people from the house to the neighbours’ house,” he said.

“When the neighbours came to the rescue of the child, they found the suspect holding her in his hand with an open cut on her neck, and a panga with blood on it,” Aiyambo said.

The baby was identified as Maria Nuusiku Lukas.

The suspect has been arrested and is being held in detention at Oshakati Police Station, Aiyambo said.
