Man appears in court for killing, mutilating sister

A man appeared in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he allegedly killed his younger sister and mutilated her genitals.

The incident happened at Okavela village in the Ohangwena region at around 20h00 on 15 November.

The police have confirmed that the suspect, Moses Ndinaafita (33), is remanded in custody for further investigation.

Ndamonghenda Shileka (16) had been home for four days before the incident, coming from Karibib where she attended school.

After allegedly committing the crime, Ndinaafita initially fled the scene.

He was arrested later that evening at around 23h00.

Ndinaafita allegedly told people he ate his sister’s genitals.

Speaking to The Namibian on Tuesday, secretary to the village headman of Okavela Sam Nekundi said he discovered Shileka’s body at her mother’s kitchen area.

Nekundi, who runs a cuca shop at the village, says he recalls seeing both Shileka and Ndinaafita at the shop on separate occasions earlier that day.

The village was a hive of activity since old-age pensions were paid out, he says.

“After she [Shileka] bought cooking oil and a soup pack she went home. However, 30 minutes later, while I was in the shop at around 20h00, I heard screams from outside.

“They were a cry for help. They said Ndinaafita was killing his sister. I got up, and along with others we ran to the house. I got there first and went straight to search the homestead. I couldn’t find anyone. I went outside the homestead and found their mother.

“She said I should go to her kitchen area. That’s where I saw her lying on the ground in a pool of blood. I called her name several times, but we realised she was no more,” Nekundi says.

The police were called to the scene and a search for Ndinaafita ensued.

“Along with the police we searched for him around nearby villages on foot, and he was arrested later at around 23h00 that same evening.”

Nekundi says he has known the family for several years and perceives Ndinaafita as mentally stable.

“He is fine as far as we know, only there was a time he lived in Windhoek, but he returned four years ago. All we noticed was that he was a little bit different than before he had gone to the city.”
