Man dies in Walvis Bay fire

A man died in a fire that gutted down about two hundred structures at the Otweya location in the Kuisebmond area at Walvis Bay on Friday.

The fire started at around 18h30 at Gerson Munenguni street.

According to Erongo police spokesperson warrant officer Tuyenikelao Tashiya, it is alleged that the fire started in the middle of the location and spread rapidly to other structures, leaving many families homeless.

The deceased’s next of kin have not yet been informed.

The man’s body was taken to the Walvis Bay State Hospital mortuary.

Walvis Bay acting fire chief Werner Namibseb on Friday said one woman was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

“A lady collapsed, probably because of the smoke. Although an ambulance was not available, she was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. She was treated and is stable,” he said.

Namiseb said efforts were being made through the council to assist the victims with medical and social needs, as well as temporary shelter for the victims.

The cause of fire has not yet been established, and police investigations are ongoing.

The structures were built on a piece of land belonging to the National Housing Enterprise.
