A man (49) died after allegedly being shot in the abdomen at a Okahandja bar on Monday.
He was identified as Titus Haihemwa on Tuesday afternoon.
Haihemwa was allegedly shot by two suspected armed men who robbed a bar attendant, Namibian Police head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa region senior inspector Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Wednesday.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Haihemwa had taken his vehicle for a car wash at the bar. While Haihemwa was waiting for his vehicle to be washed, a taxi allegedly dropped the two armed men at the bar.
“They immediately approached a bar lady, who had just collected N$1 400 from a cash box,” said Mbeha.
The money was intended to pay someone who won a betting competition, she noted.
While waiting, Haihemwa allegedly saw the two armed men pointing a firearm at the bar lady and grabbing the money from her, said Mbeha.
Haihemwa, who was also carrying his pistol, allegedly pulled it out to scare the armed men off. At that point, the two suspects aimed at Haihemwa and shot him once in the right side of the abdomen, said Mbeha.
The two men fled the scene with the money on foot, leaving Haihemwa injured, she added.
Haihemwa was taken to the Okahandja State Hospital and then transferred to Windhoek for further medical attention, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
The taxi drivers who transported the bar lady and the two armed men were both traced on Monday and are being questioned by the police.
It is alleged that the two taxi drivers are brothers, said Mbeha.
The bar lady was also detained for interrogation, she added.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
