It might have been a while since you’ve heard the name MasZanga but that’s about to change as the soulful trio are back with a bang with their new album ‘Delayed Millionaires’.
The group consists of Marco ‘Kazanga’ Kazondana, Armando ‘ZangaMan’ Viringa and Bronson ‘Key’ Tjihukununa, all hailing from what they call the dusty streets of Otjiwarongo.
The image they portray today is worlds away from their humble beginnings, oozing sophisticated chivalry and class which garners a strong corporate appeal. MasZanga embraces cultural diversity through their music which talks about life’s struggles and even taps into childhood lullabys almost long forgotten.
“Our music is the closest to what local indigenous sounds fused with all local ethnic groups’ traditional elements sound like, which we combined with the modern Afro-pop sound, to give it a modern twist which is currently trending,” the group said.
MasZanga has come a long way in the industry. In 2012, they were nominated at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) for their track ‘Nale’ – their first commercial single under manager and music producer Arrafath Muhuure.
“The nomination was followed with our debut album ‘Tjaaaiii’ released in October 2012. It was a massive hit, it cemented us as one of the heavyweights in the Namibian music industry. The album was so big we performed at various events such as the Miss Namibia pageant, opening for American rap sensation Eve, and various music festivals across the country. This success was followed by a historic nine nominations in the NAMAs 2013,” MasZanga revealed.
Due to contractual disputes, mismanagement of their careers and ultimately them parting ways with their label, they were withdrawn from all categories.
Four years later and the group looks fresher than ever.
“We have recently released our latest offering called ‘Delayed Millionaires’ and have shot two videos for the singles ‘Carolina’ and ‘Kontorola’.
The videos are available on YouTube, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive since the release, they said.
The soulful and distinctly Namibian album features other tracks such as ‘Mbaramba’ featuring The Dogg, ‘Tribute’ featuring Hboi and ‘Baam Baam’ featuring Hoan, J-Black, Tesh, KK, Berthild and Ula.
“It took us this long because we wanted to make sure that we give the nation and the world a product that has value in terms of its content, production and sound quality.”
