Maxuilili funds ‘not missing’

Maxuilili funds ‘not missing’

OSHAKATI – The Oshakati Town Council has denied that it has misappropriated the money donated by the late Swapo parliamentarian Nathaniel Maxuilili for the provision of clean drinking water to residents of the Ompumbu location.

A former member of the Oshakati Council, Lucky Shoopala of the DTA, claimed at a DTA campaign meeting in Oshakati recently that the Oshakati Town Council had misappropriated the N$2 000. Shoopala said Maxuilili donated the money after residents of Ompumbu complained to him that the council had disconnected the water supply to the location’s only public water point.Residents of Ompumbu, about 150 households, have had to fetch water from a nearby canal ever since. The Chairperson of the Ompumbu development committee, Onesmus Shilunga, told Nampa that some residents continued to drink unsafe water from the canal. The Town Council says some of the money donated by Maxuilili was used to reconnect the water supply to the location and a new public water point was also provided. However, the new water point was disconnected again after the community of Ompumbu failed to settle the account for their water consumption.According to the Council, the balance of the money was deposited in the account of the Ompumbu community, but was later absorbed by the community’s arrears.- NampaShoopala said Maxuilili donated the money after residents of Ompumbu complained to him that the council had disconnected the water supply to the location’s only public water point.Residents of Ompumbu, about 150 households, have had to fetch water from a nearby canal ever since. The Chairperson of the Ompumbu development committee, Onesmus Shilunga, told Nampa that some residents continued to drink unsafe water from the canal. The Town Council says some of the money donated by Maxuilili was used to reconnect the water supply to the location and a new public water point was also provided. However, the new water point was disconnected again after the community of Ompumbu failed to settle the account for their water consumption.According to the Council, the balance of the money was deposited in the account of the Ompumbu community, but was later absorbed by the community’s arrears.- Nampa
