Mbumba congratulates Chapo as Mozambique burns

President Nangolo Mbumba has congratulated Mozambique’s president-elect Daniel Chapo of the Frelimo party after the country’s Supreme Court declared the elections legitimate, despite fierce resistance from the opposition.

Disgruntled Mozambicans took to the streets in a show of defiance of the court’s ruling, which comes nearly two months after elections were held in that country.

Mozambique went to the polls on 9 October.

“I wish to congratulate His Excellency Daniel Chapo and Frelimo for emerging victorious in the recently concluded general elections in Mozambique. As my dear brother His Excellency Daniel Chapo and Frelimo undertake this important mandate of service to the Mozambican nation, I am confident that president-elect Chapo will lead the people of Mozambique towards prosperity, unity and greater heights of development,” says Mbumba in a statement.

Venâncio Mondlane, who came second, has however rallied his supporters to resist what he has termed a “rigged vote”.

Since Monday, his supporters have been chanting his name on the streets and blockading roads, prompting the police to respond with teargas.

Mbumba says the Namibian government looks forward to working with Chapo and the Frelimo government “for continued fruitful bilateral relations in the interest of our people, peace and a prosperous Southern African Development Community”.
