Mbumba pays tribute to Unam Katima campus director

LAID TO REST … Professor Bennett Kangumu, who died in September, has been praised for making significant contributions to education.

President Nangolo Mbumba has paid tribute to University of Namibia (Unam) Katima Mulilo campus director Bennett Kangumu, who was laid to rest at Chisawo village in the Zambezi region on Sunday.

Mbumba said the historian and professor, who died on 24 September, taught the youth the importance of hard work.

Mbumba, in a message of condolence read on his behalf by Unam vice chancellor professor Kenneth Matenguat the memorial, said the country has lost a bright young star whose significant contributions in education and academic development will be remembered.

“The late Kangumu taught and imparted to our youth the essential ethos of nation-building.

These are: hard work, self-respect, respect of others, inclusivity, leadership, academic development and community upliftment.

“His passing has left an irreplaceable void in the family, both the social and academic communities, and the entire Namibian society. “Let his uplifting legacy serve as a beacon of inspiration for us to continue taking hands and building a peaceful, united and prosperous Namibian house.”

Matengu, speaking in his own capacity, said Kangumu was dedicated to education and never wavered in carrying out his duties.

“You would agree with me that he used his blessings to bless others. For the whole period when he was ill, he was always concerned about the staff and students at the campus. May his resilience be an example of commitment to a vision,” he said.

Kangumu was the director of the National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) in 2019 when the Fishrot scandal was exposed.

Kangumu, at the time, said the Fishcor board of directors did not approve the payment of N$17.5 million that ended up in the pockets of politically connected individuals.

He said the company should not be held responsible for Fishrot.

In an affidavit submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission three years ago and filed in the High Court, Kangumu noted that the Fishcor board was unaware of the appointment of James Hatuikulipi as chairperson.

Kangumu is survived by his wife, three children, one grandchild, his mother, grandmother and siblings.
