President Nangolo Mbumba visited the site on Monday where a new rehabilitation centre for the visually impaired will be constructed in the Zambezi region.
The Liselo sub-khuta, under the Mafwe Traditional Authority, donated the land to the Eastern Namibia Visually Impaired Association for the development of the centre.
Mbumba, who is the patron for people with disabilities, appealed to citizens to treat those with disabilities equally.
“Let us put ignorance aside and appreciate the life of every human being. We must treat everyone equally,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude for the land donated for the rehabilitation centre.
Ben Mukasa, chairperson of the Eastern Namibia Visually Impaired Association, highlighted that the centre will not only be the first of its kind in the region but will also help ensure that the visually impaired feel included.
“Despite the government’s introduction of inclusive education in schools across the country, we have realised that the visually impaired are still left behind. Most schools lack qualified teachers who can teach braille. However, with this rehabilitation centre, our people will no longer be left behind as they will be able to receive education,” he said.
