Media union condemns NBC executive editor’s suspension as attack on press freedom

Anna Nicodemus

The Namibia Media Professionals Union (Nampu) has condemned the suspension of Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) executive editor and journalist Anna Nicodemus, calling it a direct attack on press freedom.

This was said by the union’s acting secretary general, Jemima Beukes, in a statement released on Friday.

“This unjustified suspension represents a direct attack on press freedom and undermines the independence of journalists in Namibia,” Beukes said.

This comes after Nicodemus confirmed her suspension on Friday morning following an interview with South African news channel Newzroom Afrika regarding president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s health.

According to Beukes, the suspension is not only a violation of Nicodemus’ rights as a journalist but also undermines the principles of free expression.

“It is crucial to note that Anna Nicodemus expressed her opinion in her personal capacity, a right fully enshrined in Namibia’s highest law —the Constitution.

“The Constitution guarantees every Namibian the fundamental right to freedom of expression, including the freedom to express personal views, even if those views may be critical or contrary to the interests of certain groups,” she said.

Nampu has called on NBC to reverse the suspension and desist from actions that restrict press freedom.

“We urge all media institutions to stand firm in their commitment to upholding the rights of journalists and the critical role of the media in holding power to account,” Beukes said.
