Mini football tournament staged to help end GBV

A mini football tournament was held as part of the observation of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in Windhoek on Saturday.

The United Nations (UN), in collaboration with the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, staged the event to address the cultural and social root causes of gender-based violence (GBV).

The event was held at the NFA Technical Centre. It was the first edition of the tournament and featured teams from Bank Windhoek, Namibia Breweries Limited, Standard Bank Namibia, FNB Namibia and The Namibian, among others.

In an exciting final, the Namibian Media Team defeated Standard Bank 5-4 during penalties to lift this year’s trophy.

NFA secretary general Charles Siyauya said the NFA understands that GBV cannot be solved over 16 days.

“This needs to be an everyday effort, hence the NFA is committed to [having] GBV courses in their annual training programmes as a tool to address GBV.

“Working closely with the United Nations, the training content and programmes will be carefully tailored to each community, ensuring that the ‘Stop GBV’ campaign reaches a wider audience, in and out of the football community.”

The tournament was sponsored by the UN, the European Union, Namdeb, WhatsOn Namibia, Desert FM, The Namibian and AdForce.
