The minister of labour, industrial relations and employment creation Utoni Nujoma on Thursday inaugurated the seventh employment equity commission at Otjiwarongo.
He said members elected to the commission must act strongly against unfair and reckless conduct by employers against employees with regards to race, sex, disability, ethnicity, and religious standing.
Nujoma said a disturbing incident took place at a workplace in Windhoek when an employer requested a female employee to undress at a shop at Chinatown.
“This is a very disturbing trend of assault against workers, and particularly a female worker, which should not be allowed to occur at the workplace – no matter the reason,” the minister said.
Nujoma urged members of the commission to engage employers on the implementation of affirmative action guidelines and to ensure transformation in the workplace.
The employment equity commission was established to address imbalances at the workplace, and to foster fair employment practices with regard to recruitment, selection, appointment, training, promotions, and equitable remuneration for previously disadvantaged persons.
