FISHERIES minister Bernhard Esau on Wednesday suspended, with immediate effect, all harvesting of white mussels and other clam species.
This follows recent media reports of large scale harvesting of white mussels taking place on the beach south of Walvis Bay.
reported on Wednesday that over 10 tonnes of white mussels had been harvested at Paaltjies beach since mid April as part of an experimental licence granted by the Namibian government to Fermar Seafoods CC (comprising Spanish and Namibian partners) to test the viability of the resource as a quota-worthy export product.
“I did suspend the harvesting of white mussels on a commercial basis until such time that we conduct our internal investigation on the special conditions attached to the licence to harvest,” Esau just told
