Miracle baby dies

THE ‘miracle baby’ who was delivered at the Windhoek Central Hospital about two weeks ago after it’s mother had taken prescribed abortion-inducing tablets has died.

Jephta Mooka Kaevara, the baby’s father, confirmed the death to The Namibian just a few hours after the baby had passed on yesterday.

The baby boy who had been named Mundjambi Muhupua (which means “In God I Can Survive”) died yesterday afternoon at the Windhoek Central Hospital where he had been rushed to on Sunday, following some complications.

The baby’s mother, Rebeka Tjombe, had a premature delivery after a doctor at the hospital had prescribed abortion-inducing tablets because he thought that there were no chances of her delivering the baby alive.

But instead of an abortion, Tjombe gave birth to the live baby boy.

Mundjambi was transferred from the Windhoek Central Hospital to Katutura State Hospital a week ago but his condition deteriorated on Saturday night and he had to be taken back to the Windhoek Central Hospital on Sunday morning.

Kaevara said the family was devastated to lose Mundjambi who was “such a lovely gift”.

“His mother is very devastated, and so is the rest of the family. It’s really sad to lose such a lovely gift. At the moment, I cannot say much. I will give you more details tomorrow,” he said.

Last week prominent gynaecologist Matti Kimberg said that the baby could suffer brain damage. It was not clear though if this is what affected the baby in the end.

Health ministry spokesperson Ester Paulus yesterday sent the ministry’s condolences to the family when The Namibian called her for comment.
