The Miss High School Namibia competition has returned and will take place at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) on 28 February.
Many beauty pageants are known to pop up now and then, many without the intention of participating in community development. However the Miss High School pageant has been known to make a difference over the years.
The aim of this initiative is to ‘help motivate pupils to dedicate more attention to their studies and put less attention to the disruptive social activities around the respective regions which the contestants represent’.
“Apart from her representing Namibia on an international platform, she will be involved in promoting an iconic inspiration to pupils around the country in improving their academic performance,” Suoma Nuunyango, pageant director for Miss High School Namibia, said.
“We believe that if Namibia needs change in the education system, pupils motivating one another is another tool to use. Her role will involve working with local children’s homes, giving hope to the less unfortunate.”
Aside from just having a title, the next Miss High School Namibia will act as an ambassador for Namibia at the Miss High School America pageant on 4 and 5 July in Orlando, Florida.
This year’s contestants are Mandy Job (Miss Oshana), Ashleigh Kleintjies (Miss Khomas), Gaironeeza Maclobo (Miss Erongo), Maureen Kamwanga (Miss Karas), Simonia Kanyumara (Miss Kavango East), Kiliboni Eustinah Mudia (Miss Zambezi), Vetondouua Tjiseua (Miss Otjozondupa), Magdalena Haipumbu (Miss Oshikoto) Lynette Jansen, (Miss Hardap) and Melody Tjiseua (Miss Kunene).
The young women are currently undertaking a project called ‘Project Champagne’ in their hometowns by visiting schools and orphanages by delivering heartwarming speeches of encouragement. The project “contributes highly to the contestants’ judging scores” and most of the girls are actually prestigious academic and sports achievers in their respective schools.
Tickets are currently available at FNCC in Windhoek for N$150 (VIP) and N$100 for normal tickets.
