Miss Universe Namibia Prisca Anyolo has revealed her second national costume for the 73rd Miss Universe Pageant.
This comes after the first one was criticised by members of the public.
Namibians took to various social media platforms to express how they felt about the first costume.
“This costume misses the mark and is quite disappointing. Namibia has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with a wealth of history embedded in its many tribes. A more thoughtful choice would be to select from one of these tribes, perhaps Nama, Ovaherero or Ovahimba and use it to share the story of their history, including the genocide, as a means to raise awareness” comments Maggie Rukoro via Instagram.
Another user says: “This costume lacks creativity, it’s a cocktail of all sorts of laziness. Namibia has better talent than this.”
“It’s giving Grade 12 matric dance,” says another user on Facebook.
The first costume, titled ‘The Desert Mirage’, is a tribute to the beauty and diversity of Namibia.
“At the heart of the design is a homage to Sandwich Harbour, the only place in the world where the desert meets the ocean in a striking and harmonious display,” says the designers.
“The second costume, inspired by the traditional attire of people of northern Namibia, is a vibrant and culturally rich garment that reflects both historical significance and modern aesthetics. This national costume dress serves as a celebration of the rich diversity and cultural heritage of the Namibian people while embracing modernity. It reflects a blend of traditional craftsmanship while showcasing Namibia’s diverse identity in a global context,” says the designer.
The second national costume received more positive responses as members of the public felt it truly represents the country’s national identity.
“This costume is top notch, it’s definitely a ten out of ten,” one person says.
“Now, we can surely go and vote. This is giving the whole of Namibia. “
“Yes, now I feel represented,” another user says.
“Miss Nambia has left for the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City and we will watch as she will make us proud, with the Land of the Brave fully supporting her.”
