Mootu questions if Presidency will dismiss sport minister over stadium

Utaara Mootu

Landless People’s Movement chief whip Utaara Mootu has questioned whether sport minister Agnes Tjongarero will be fired for the delayed renovations of Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.

Mootu yesterday in the National Assembly questioned minister in the Presidency Christine //Hoëbes about what will be done about the sport, youth and national service minister’s lack of action regarding the renovations.

The lawmaker also queried the motive behind vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s criticism of Tjongarero for failing to start renovations of the stadium.

“With elections on the horizon, there is a growing perception that these actions are a political stunt aimed at swaying the youth vote. Can you assure the public that this is not merely a tactic to influence voters, and will decisive action be taken before the election period begins?” asked Mootu.

Nandi-Ndaitwah last Friday criticised Tjongarero for failing to start renovating Independence Stadium.

She said Tjongarero undertook in writing that renovations would commence on 28 August with the appointment of a contractor, but she allegedly failed to honour this promise.

“I am disappointed by the minister . . . Currently we have our sport people who go to play outside, because we do not have a stadium in the country.

“They told me they will commence with renovations on 28 August and when I asked about the progress, there was nothing.

“I was always asking for updates and I was told we are doing well, when in actual fact nothing is happening,” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said leaders should not continue to lie to the nation as it creates a lack of trust.

“I will not allow them to continue lying. I will not let it go, I will be on them and if need be, someone has to be held accountable,” she said.
