Mozambique were the big winners on day five of the 2013 COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championships, but there is still all to play for following the three pool matches.
Nothing has been decided yet in the pools as hosts Lesotho and Kenya drew in a battle of the big-guns in Group A.
But it was Mozambique who made a big statement of intent in Group B when they triumphed Madagascar 6-0.
The win takes the Young Mambas to the top of the pool on goal-difference from Angola, who beat the Malagasy 5-1 on Wednesday. A hat-trick from Clesio Baque and further goals via Dercio Matimbe, Luis Miquissone and Norberto Norberto gave Mozambique the handsome win.
Mozambique led 2-0 at the break, but let lose scoring three times in four second half minutes to give the result a much more emphatic look. In the second match played in Group A, the island nations of Comoros and Mauritius played to a 0-0 draw, a result that both might have felt is a disappointing one in a game they could have won. Hosts Lesotho were forced to come from behind again to earn a point, just as they had on the opening day against Comoros, when they drew 1-1 with East African guests Kenya. Timonah Wanyonyi had put the Kenyans ahead on 26 minutes as he bundled the ball home following a parry from Thabiso Lichaba.
That was the way it stayed until the hour-mark, when Tumelo Khutlang let fly with a thunderbolt that found its ay into the back of the net.
Neither side could find a winner from there and it is still all to play for in Group A where victory for Kenya in their final game against Comoros will take them into the semifinals. But if they do drop points then hosts Lesotho could overtake them with a win against Mauritius.
