Namibian musician Strauss Lunyangwe, popularly known as Mr Makoya has released a single titled ‘Almal’ which he describes as a track with a true Namibian feel.
In a recent interview with Unwrap.online, he unveiled the inspiration behind the song, saying the idea was further fuelled by his time in the United States (US) where he performed last year.
Mr Makoya embarked on a solo music career 13 years ago, after being part of kasi music group Matongo Family since the 1990s.
“The narrative I am trying to drive is to make the new single a December hit. As Namibians, we absorb everything we hear from other countries such as the US. We have so much talent to absorb here but we refuse to do so,” he said.
Mr Makoya went on to say his only hope is for local content to be consumed more by listeners and fans locally and internationally.
“Our job as artists is to make sure we put out quality music and hopefully win over consumers to buy, request and play our music. We will always try and find ways to put out top tier music on all platforms, but the power is in the hands of our people. Hopefully they can post it and help promote it on their platforms; that’s they only way we will be able to compete with international songs,” he added.
With the aim of remaining consistent and promoting local music, Mr Makoya has also collaborated with other industry stars such as Mabuzza and Tuko.
The music video for the song is already online, while plans to launch a new summer line named ‘Turastyle’ are in the pipeline.
“So far, so good. The team and I are working tirelessly promoting [the song]. As you know, the real work starts when you release a song or album,” Mr Makoya said.
The artist recalled the experience of working on the song, saying producers Elvo and Mr Glo made the process effortless.
“They understand my signature more than anyone and I trust their production skills. I mean, the end product speaks for itself and I hope fans enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
‘Almal’ is available on all music streaming platforms.
