MOBILE Telecommunications Limited has opened employment opportunities for artisans/painters in all 14 regions through its ‘Paint Namibia Blue’ project.
Through the project, scheduled to start this month, Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) plans to use unemployed painters to paint its outlets in all regions.
In a media statement issued yesterday, MTC’s chief of corporate affairs, Tim Ekandjo, said while the project is aimed at increasing the company’s visibility, MTC also urges other companies to create opportunities that would benefit the growing numbers of unemployed youth.
“With this project, we wish to contribute towards youth empowerment, hence we intend to solely partner with local skilful and capable painters (men and women) with outstanding portfolios to execute the task,” Ekandjo said.
According to the labour force survey by the Namibia Statistics Agency, which is over a year behind, almost half (46,1%) of active youths do not have jobs.
The situation of youth unemployment is worse in the two Kavango regions (62%) and Kunene, Ohangwena and Oshikoto that have half and more of their youth sitting at home.
He said the project “will extract talent from the benefiting 121 constituencies” and take skills from a constituency to do work in their constituency to ensure that the opportunity is shared equally.
“The lack of employment opportunities is a serious concern in the country, with at least half of the youth being unproductive,” Ekandjo said.
