POLICE officers rushed to the normally quiet Eros suburb of Windhoek yesterday morning, where a 45-year-old man had allegedly been shot dead by his 20-year-old son.
Louis Van Zyl was reportedly shot in the back of the head and died instantly, Police spokesperson Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi told The Namibian. The shooting happened at around 11h00 at the Van Zyls’ home in Omatako Street.Van Zyl’s son was arrested on the premises.The younger Van Zyl was taken to the Windhoek Police station, where he made a statement on the incident.Family members at the house declined to comment on what had happened.Neighbours spoken to expressed shock over the incident.They said that as far as they had been aware, the Van Zyl men always seemed to have a close bond.”We didn’t even hear a shot fired.We were busy eating when I saw all the Police vans stop at their house,” a domestic worker working for one of the neighbours said.Police could not confirm or deny reports that the family had been arguing before the shooting, Sergeant Nuuyi said.HACKED TO DEATH * Police have also confirmed the death of 31-year-old Shipandeni Kanyemba.He was apparently attacked by five unknown suspects while walking along Victoria Street in Windhoek on Monday night.According to the Police, Kanyemba and his brother had been chased down the street.The suspects caught up with him, but his brother managed to get away.Eyewitnesses claimed that Kanyemba had been hacked to death with a panga, but the Police yesterday said only that he had been hit on the head with an unknown object.Kanyemba’s cellphone was stolen by his attackers, Police said.No suspects have yet been arrested.The shooting happened at around 11h00 at the Van Zyls’ home in Omatako Street.Van Zyl’s son was arrested on the premises.The younger Van Zyl was taken to the Windhoek Police station, where he made a statement on the incident.Family members at the house declined to comment on what had happened.Neighbours spoken to expressed shock over the incident.They said that as far as they had been aware, the Van Zyl men always seemed to have a close bond.”We didn’t even hear a shot fired.We were busy eating when I saw all the Police vans stop at their house,” a domestic worker working for one of the neighbours said.
