BULAWAYO – Team Namibia won their first gold medals at the 2014 Zone Six Youth Games here on Wednesday through athletes Lahja Ishitile and Aino Mushila.
The two para-athletes won gold medals for Namibia during the track events of the competition, which is currently underway in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Ishitile won two gold medals and Mushila claimed one gold medal and a silver.
Ishitile won the first gold medal for Team Namibia in the women’s 400 metre T11 sprint, and she then won another gold medal in the women’s 100m T11 sprint, outclassing her opponents with a strong time of 13.52 seconds.
Mushila won his gold medal in the men’s 400m T11 category, and the silver medal in the men’s 100m T12 sprint, after coming in second place.
T11 and T12 categories are for athletes with visual impairments, and they commonly run with guides.
Other medal winners on the day were Ester Kamwengo who won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m T12 sprint; and Ndara Emilia who won bronze in the women’s 400m T11 race, after the initial bronze medallist Marcia Marillas Moiiane of Mozambique was disqualified for holding another athlete during the race.
Speaking to Nampa after the race Mushila said he was very pleased to win a gold medal for his country, and he was looking forward to getting more medals.
Namibia still has athletes competing in the men and women’s T13 400m and 800m finals later in the day.
As it stands, Namibia has won six medals so far – three gold, one silver and two bronze.
Namibia is also represented in netball, boxing, tennis, football and swimming at the Games. – Nampa
