Musicians raise awareness of Covid-19

COVID-19 has inspired a group of Namibian musicians to create songs detailing the importance of staying positive during this trying time.

On Friday, gospel artist Maranatha released the track, ‘There is Hope’ which she says emphasises a message of hope in the midst of despair.

“I want people to remember that there is hope and that we will eventually pull through this. During this time it’s important that artists bring their work forward and help in ways they can,” Maranatha said.

Artist, producer and vocal coach, Zee, based at Katima Mulilo has also teamed up with six artists from the Zambezi region to release ‘Song of Hope’. The song features Guru, Lilianah, Moyo, Chezlam, Prince T and Linda, and encourages Namibians to unite to fight Covid-19. The song also highlights the importance of working alongside health professionals to contain the spread of the virus by practising social distancing, washing hands properly and staying home.

Zee said it has always been his dream to work with artists from different ethnic groups.

“The song features lyrics in Totela, Sifwe, Heyi, Silozi, Zulu, Subia and English. Covid-19 is a national concern and we all need to come together. The idea of using different languages on one song was to reach out to all Namibians. We believe that educating people on the matter is very important,” Zee said.

Prince T said through the project they hope to encourage artists to unite.

“Coming together as artists from all different areas and genres to blend our singing styles as one was a blessing for me. Music can spread information fast and by using different languages we aimed to bring the message to almost everyone,” he said.

Lilianah said as an artist her role is to inspire the public during these challenging times.

“Seeing the panic that the world is going through, it is always a great idea to sing songs of hope. Songs have the potential to let people know that no matter how tough things seem, we are going to overcome the situation and we should always believe in God.”

My N*gga Get Rich also released a song, titled ‘Coronavirus Prayer’ on YouTube last week, adding to the list of artists aiming to entertain and inspire during lockdown.
