MVA Fund urges motorists to drive with caution during rainy season

Rosalia Martins-Hausiku

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund chief executive Rosalia Martins-Hausiku has urged drivers on the road to drive carefully during the rainy season.

“Preliminary crash figures released by the Namibian Police last week highlight a devastating reality. Over 400 road crashes and 80 lives lost during this festive season alone,” Martins-Hausiku said.

She said the number of recorded accidents are an important reminder of the risks on roads, worsened by bad weather.

“The fund, therefore, urges all motorists to slow down, maintain a safe following distance and remain vigilant as they return to their respective destinations from the holidays,” she said in a statement on Wednesday.

Martins-Hausiku further said as many drivers return home from their holidays across the country, the MVA Fund, together with other road safety stakeholders appeal to all road users to exercise extreme caution during poor weather conditions.

She emphasised impatient drivers, blind spot overtaking, slippery road surface and reduction in visibility as some of the root cause of crashes.

“In the case of any emergency, please call the MVA Fund toll-free emergency response number 9682,” Martins-Hausiku said.
