Artist Alpheus Mvula continues bovine exploration in ‘Heads of Cattle’. An outdoor exhibition featuring the artist’s signature subject matter rendered expertly in stone.
Artfully fashioning a cattle pen on a Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre terrace, Mvula showcases a collection building on last year’s ‘ but with a focus on the eyes, head and horns.
Presenting a cow head as a human body and horns reflecting hands, the maturity of the cattle or the owner’s achievement, Mvula exhibits some familiar pieces while pairing the exhibition with a series of workshops on the art of sculpture.
An advocate for public art in celebration of Namibia’s traditional and natural heritage, Mvula’s work is often appreciated outside in order to catch the eye and imagination of passersby.
With wrapped sticks recalling kraals swinging lightly in the breeze behind a grass enclosure, Mvula harks back to the traditional spaces that continue to inspire him and which the artist sees as places of pride, of sustenance and wealth.
A stylistic and skillful exhibit worth one’s perusal in a sunny little annex, ‘Heads of Cattle’ will be on display at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre until 11 September.
