Four Namibian musicians have scooped nominations for the upcoming African Music Industry (AMI) Awards Afrika.
The official AMI Awards website touts the event as “multi-cultural awards with the sole purpose of honouring African artists and musicians, arts and cultures, entertainment, humanitarian acts, entertainment leaders, entrepreneurs and the creative spirit of ordinary people who have captured audiences for generations and challenged our understanding through their arts and works”.
Newcomer ML received her first award nomination in the Best Female Newcomer category for her single ‘O’Radio’ which is off her debut album ‘The Diplomat’.
Having only dropped the album late last year, ML said that the nomination came as a pleasant surprise as she did not even know about the awards.
“I’m excited but I’m also shocked. I realised that the internet is really powerful,” she said while adding that she is thankful for the support that she is getting from her fans.
Nominated in the Best Female Southern Artist category is Sally Boss Madam for her single ‘What You Say’. The song is off her latest album ‘My Black’ which was also released at the end of 2017.
When contacted for comment, the songstress, through Boss Madam Productions, said that she is thrilled with the nomination. “The team is ready to push the album, giving each song an opportunity to be heard and appreciated for its uniqueness,” she said.
She called on the public to support local music and start voting.
Kalux scooped a Best Male Southern Africa Artist nod for his song ‘Kudurupa’, with Tate Buti receiving a nomination in the same category for ‘Olusheno’ which features Young T.
Kalux and Tate Buti face competition from contenders such as Ruberto, Nasty C as well as Cassper Nyovest.
The AMI Awards Afrika are based in Las Vegas. The awards will take place in March in Uganda. To vote for the four Namibian nominees, go to amiawardsafrika.com.
