Namibia, Angola forge socio-economic development partnership

Namibia and Angola have explored potential areas of synergy to advance Namibia’s socio-economic development endeavours.

This comes after the parliamentary standing committee on economics and public administration recently undertook a learning experience visit to Angola from 7-11 August.

The two countries delved into areas to address poverty alleviation and potential areas of economic development exchanges.
According to the committee, more effective strategies can be developed to uplift the country’s population from poverty.

Head of the delegation and chairperson of the committee, Natangwe Ithete, said they recognised the tremendous strides that Angola has made in areas critical to Namibia’s economic development.

Ithete said the committee seeks to learn from Angola’s experiences in local participation.

In addition, the two countries discussed trade exchanges in the areas of beef and electricity supply.

Ithete said Angola may intensify the import of beef from Namibia, which may reduce import costs – taking into account its geographic proximity.

“It is necessary to increasingly strengthen relations between the two countries. The people of Angola and Namibia have a long history,” Ithete said.

According to the committee, recent data reveals that Angola is among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of contribution to energy generation from hydroelectric projects.

Ithete said the two countries agreed to collaborate and strengthen trade as it will be less expensive.

During their visit, the committee met with relevant economic development stakeholders such as ministries and agencies.
