Namibia and Germany will be co-facilitating a United Nations (UN) summit aimed at securing a better future for the next generation.

The United Nations Summit of the Future will take place in New York on 22 and 23 September.

The aim is to enhance cooperation between countries on critical global challenges, the UN says.

“The summit is meant to accelerate the achievements of the UN Agenda 2030, and to build collective efforts to address emerging global risks and challenges,” minister of international relations and cooperation Peya Mushelenga said at an awareness event in Windhoek on Thursday.

He says Namibia will reap benefits from co-facilitating the summit.

Germany’s ambassador, Thorsten Hutter, at the event said co-facilitating the summit is a symbol of the close cooperation between Namibia and Germany to strengthen multilateralism.

United Nations Development Programme representative in Namibia Alka Bhatia said the summit aims to foster resilience and push for sustainable financing, while putting the youth at the centre and promoting science, technology and innovation.

“The aim is to accelerate the sustainable development goals and to improve people’s lives, especially the most vulnerable and those being left behind,” she said.
