Namibia was among 10 southern African countries that attended the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) Zone 6 Athletes Forum in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on Friday and Saturday.
The forum brought together 20 Athletes Commission representatives, including four from Namibia.
They are Anoca Athletes Commission Continental chairperson Gaby Ahrens, Anoca Zone 6 secretary general Joan Smit, Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) Athletes Commission chairperson Maike Diekmann and her deputy Romio Goliath.
“The focus was on several key themes: Ensuring minimum compliance of athletes commissions, implementing athletes’ declarations and highlighting the importance of communication, relationship building and strategic planning in sports governance,” Ahrens said.
“Our speakers addressed the need for robust compliance mechanisms within athletes commissions to safeguard athletes’ rights and interests. Discussions also centred around the effective implementation of athletes’ declarations to promote integrity and fairness in sports,” she said.
“Furthermore, the significance of fostering open communication channels and building strong relationships between stakeholders was emphasised as essential for driving positive change in the sports community.”
