Namibia Masters do well in SA

THE Namibia Men’s Masters Hockey team gave a good account of itself in a test series against South Africa in Johannesburg last weekend.

In the first encounter against the South African 50 and over side on Friday, South Africa came out on top by two goals to one, in a fiercely contested and hard-fought match.

The following day, Namibia played against the South African 55 and over team and managed to draw the match 1-1, although they should have won as they squandered numerous chances in the circle.

On Sunday, against the same 55+ side, Namibia went on the attack from the start and scored two quick goals. They played with a lot more patience and composure which ensured that they dominated possession and capitalised on the chances they created in the opponents circle. This approach paid good dividends as they went on to comfortably win the match 6-1.

The side was coached by the experienced Randy Slabbert and captained by Luke Pennefather with Steve Pell as the vice captain.

The players’ ages ranged from 43 to 67, although the average age was about 50.

The series was made possible by a significant sponsorship from Castle Lite, who are also sponsoring the Masters Summer Indoor League which is currently being held on Wednesday evenings at DTS.

Other sponsorships were received from Sanlam, Absolute Logistics, XCO Group, Dynamic Mobile Solutions, Seapride, Andy’s Pub & Grill, Medscheme, Andrew Muller and Werner Margull.

Due to the success of this inaugural tour, the Namibia Masters Men’s side has been invited to play another series against South Africa in Cape Town in February 2019.
