Kat Steenkamp and the women’s pairs team of Marietjie van den Berg and Bianca Lewis won Namibia’s first medals at the African States Bowls Tournament in Orapa, Botswana on Tuesday.

In the men’s singles competition, Steenkamp finished second overall.

He lost his opening two matches to South Africa (21-14) and Zimbabwe (21-18) but then beat Botswana 21-17 and Kenya 21-11 to finish joint second with Zimbabwe on six points, behind South Africa who won the gold medal after finishing on 12 points.

Steenkamp, however, just edged out his Zimbabwean opponent to the silver medal with a better shot aggregate of +4 compared to -5.

In the women’s pairs competition, South Africa won the gold medal with 12 points after winning all four of their matches, while Van den Bergh and Lewis won the silver medal after finishing second on nine points.

They beat Zimbabwe 19-8, Botswana 23-9 and Kenya 24-11, and suffered a narrow 19-18 defeat to South Africa. Kenya won the bronze medal with a total of six points.

Namibia’s women’s fours team, consisting of Diana Viljoen, Bianca Lewis, Elzaan de Vries and Miranda Bezuidenhout, got off to a great start when they beat South Africa 18-16 yesterday.

They now have a good chance of also winning a medal, with matches against Zimbabwe, Kenya and Botswana still to come.
