Namibia plan for Uganda qualifiers

NETBALL Namibia has selected a provisional under-21 national side to prepare for upcoming 2021 Netball World Youth Cup qualifiers in Uganda.

The team was assembled following a training camp held in Windhoek over the weekend.

“The final squad will be reduced to the international number of 12. The team will be engaged in a international friendly against Botswana where the final 12 players will be selected,” said Netball Namibia vice president and public relations head Rebekka Goagoses-Nekundi.

“This exercise is necessitated by the Under 21 World Youth Cup qualifiers to take place in Uganda in May 2020.”

The 2021 Netball World Youth Cup, which takes place in Fiji between 10 and 19 June, is the pinnacle of netball competition for emerging players who are under 21 years of age and has been held every four years since 1988.

The most recent tournament took place in Gaborone, Botswana in 2017 – the first time the International Netball Federation held an international event on the African continent.

Australia and New Zealand are the only teams to win the championship title with both countries winning four gold medals throughout the tournament’s history.

In Namibia’s preliminary squad: Ashiya Otto, Mianka Robberts and Rachelle Roetz (Erongo); Tharine Bergh and Annette Steyn (Hardap); Coré Michau (//Kharas); Zanté Farmer, Monica Gomases, Mbahimua Kakuenje, Tilie Kamati, Urikombanda Katjatenja, Corry Mupenda, Berné Nel, Shawna Pieterse, Charlene Shaanika and Roché van Wyk (Khomas); Zaanri Labuschagne (Oshikoto); Lea Hugo, Ngumekujorisa Hamajava, Uendjisuvera Kangumine, Chantel Louw and Aina Samuel (Otjozondjupa); Halle Pack and Tjeripo Kambirongo (Tisan, Khomas).
