NAMIBIA finished second in a recent women’s Four Nations Cricket Tournament in Gaborone, Botswana.
Along with the hosts, Namibia, Mozambique and Swaziland competed in the annual contest in preparation for the ICC tournament in Kenya, scheduled for later this year.
Namibia played their first match against Mozambique, who were all out for 79 after 25 overs. However, Namibia won with 5 wickets in hand in 15,2 overs. Namibia’s Yasmeen Khan was named player of that match.
Namibia also recorded a victory against Swaziland after scoring 288 runs in 40 overs. The Swazis were all out for 78 as Namibia won by 183 runs, with Namibian vice-captain Chantelle Estherhuizen named player of the match for scoring 58 runs.
In their next match, Namibia came up short against a tough Botswana team in a very competitive match, which resulted in Namibia ending the the tournament as runners-up.
Botswana won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 184/4 in 40 overs. Namibia lost an early crucial wicket, leaving the team vulnerable. In the end, they lost the match but managed to score 113 runs for 9 wickets in 40 overs.
Namibia’s wicket keeper, Carmen Engelbrecht, scooped the best wicket keeper award of the tournament. “Cricket Namibia thanks Bank Windhoek for their sponsorship, making it possible for the ladies to participate in tournaments and the continuation of ladies cricket development”, said Jona Ambuga, Development Coordinator for Cricket Namibia.
