Namibia Students’ Magazine – Now Available

It’s official – the first edition of the Namibia Students’ Magazine is now available. Started by Abraham Shatipamba who doubles as the editor of the magazine, one of the main aims was to unite students under one platform.

“We cater to students from the International University of Management (IUM), the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and the University of Namibia (Unam),” he said.

“Why not have fun on campus? We don’t have anything else like this – pupils don’t know who to talk to, so we also act as a student advisor.”

Previously, Shatipamba said he was looking for a sponsorship for the magazine, but he was not able to secure any.

“Companies want to see the products first, so I was helped out by a friend.”

Shatipamba feels that students should come forward and write their own stories.

“I never studied journalism, so I’m looking for people to come and join the team, like those who are in arts, fashion, etc. In the future, we’re also going to put the magazine online,” he said.

Noting that a lot of people don’t like reading, Shatipamba hopes to change the youth’s mindset.

“These days, the youth are into things that can’t buy them a future.”

The first edition includes articles by Shatipamba on the ‘Hopes of Seeing Success’, ‘The Allure of Information’, brief histories about the universities in Namibia and internship opportunities.

Several contributors have also written articles in the magazine, as well as Dr Chris van Zyl from the School of Management Sciences.

NH Garments was one of the organisations responsible for printing the magazine. Simon Haihambo, supervisor at NH, said that it was a good initiative.

“Shatipamba approached us and said that it was going to benefit the students so we helped out.”

The collaboration has been good so far and Haihambo said if Shatipamba has any demands for more copies, they will be ready.
