THE White Ribbon Campaign Namibia, a non-governmental organisation focused on engaging men and boys to campaign, speak out and take action to end violence against women and girls, will celebrate World Day of the Boy Child (WDBC) in Windhoek today.
The day, supported by The Voice of Men 360, is celebrated on 16 May under the theme: ‘Boys and Their Mental Health’.
WDBC was inaugurated in 2018 and will be observed in 27 countries this year.
“Somewhere along the journey from boyhood to manhood, boys are socialised not to express their natural and spontaneous reactions to spiritual, physical, emotional, and psychological pain, disappointment and rejection.
They are socialised to equate strength and masculinity with suppressing their natural and spontaneous reaction to pain, disappointment and rejection, not asking for help, and shunning vulnerability,” said a statement by White Ribbon Campaign Namibia, released yesterday.
The event will stimulate global dialogue on creating a nurturing world for boys, especially the vulnerable ones.
“It has also created and supported initiatives that improve the manner in which boys address and resolve their mental and physical health issues.
“Let us work together to create a safer, better world,” reads the statement.
The White Ribbon Campaign identifies and supports existing initiatives which have a successful track record of addressing and helping to eradicate the academic underperformance of boys and adolescent males.
