Namibia to hand over SADC chair

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob is set to relinquish his role as Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairperson during the 39th ordinary SADC summit this weekend.

In a statement issued by presidential press secretary Alfredo Hengari on Thursday, he said Geingob will hand over the role to Tanzanian president John Magufuli during the two-day summit to be held in Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania last hosted the SADC summit 16 years ago, in 2003, under the chairpersonship of former president Benjamin Mkapa.

Geingob assumed the role of SADC chairperson in August 2018.

The statement documented the successful peaceful elections held in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Madagascar, and Geingob serving as witness at the signing of the Maputo Peace Accord, as some of the pinnacles of his tenure as chairperson.

“I can attest that it was not an easy undertaking to ensure that the elections in the DRC were finally held, and conducted in a peaceful environment,” Geingob was quoted in the statement.

“As I bid farewell, I feel honoured to have chaired SADC and pleased to say that we have taken significant steps towards the attainment of the objectives of development and enhancing the quality of life of citizens in the region.”
