Namibia to host 10th African climate change conference

The conference, to be held under the theme ‘Just Transition in Africa: Transforming Dialogue into Action’ will be held in Windhoek from 24 to 28 October, and is organised by the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) in collaboration with the Namibian government.

According to the ACPC, the objectives of the conference are to deliberate on the actions required for a just transition in Africa, and to leverage African leaders’ voices to mobilise international support for a green and resilient recovery in Africa.

The conference will also seek to increase ambition on national determined contributions, particularly on finance, by ramping up the offer on the quantity and quality of finance for adaptation and mitigation.

By uniting different platforms, parallel sessions for dialogue and interaction, the conference will facilitate and enrich the sharing of lessons, key research findings, outreach and policy uptake, as well as stimulate investment.

It is also hoped that these discussions would catalyse a common position on Africa’s approach to just transition in the lead-up to the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to be held in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, next month.

In addition to discussions, there will also be side events, as well as an exhibition to showcase innovations and initiatives related to the themes of the conference.

A call to action will be widely disseminated and taken to climate global high-level events.

Namibia is a party to both the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Due to its arid and semi-arid environment and its overdependence on rain-fed agriculture, Namibia is one of the countries in the world which are highly vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change.
