Namibia to play at Netball Varsity Games

WINDHOEK – Namibia has been drawn against defending champions South Africa, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Group B for the group stages of the World University Netball Championships in Uganda.

The championships are scheduled for 17 to 21 September at the Makerere University in Kampala.

The draw, which was conducted on 29 August, saw host Uganda, United States, Singapore and Kenya selected for Group A.

In the 2016 edition of the tournament in the United States of America (USA), Namibia lost to Australia in the semi-finals by a 61-44 score line.

They then went on to beat the USA in a consolation game, before beating Trinidad and Tobago 52-38 in the fifth and sixth final playoff match to finish fifth overall.

Meanwhile Manuel Tjivera, the coach of the Namibian team, said he is not underestimating any of the group opponents.

“It is a tough draw. We will take it one game after the other. We don’t have any targets for now because our preparations are not ideal as we do not have any support from corporate Namibia or the government,” he said.

Tjivera added that the players are training from home as they cannot go into camp because of the lack of support.

He added that under these circumstances, it will be difficult to produce the desired results.

The event is held biennially by the International University Sports Federation. – Nampa
