Namibia welcomes Gaza ceasefire

Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation executive director Penda Naanda says Namibia applauds the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire which ended a five-day Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw numerous innocent civilians killed and injured, with damage to more than 50 homes.
Naanda said the ceasefire came into effect on 13 May.

“The escalation of violence against the Palestinian people comes at a time when the international community was commemorating the one-year anniversary of the killing of the Palestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, on 11 May 2022,” Naanda said.

Namibia reiterates its clarion call to hold those responsible accountable on the Israeli authorities, who this month confirmed culpability for Akleh’s killing, he said.

“Namibia further reaffirms her solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterates its long standing and unequivocal call for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to independently co-exist with the State of Israel, in line with the relevant United Nations Resolutions,” he said.
