Namibian bowlers send Tanzania packing

Namibia’s u19 cricket team gave a great performance to beat Tanzania by 104 runs at the ICC u19 Men’s World Cup Africa Qualifier in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Namibia were all out for 137, which did not seem much, but in the end was more than enough as Tanzania were bundled out for a mere 33 runs.

In Namibia’s innings, most of the top-order batsmen got amongst the runs, but no one could build a big score.

Gerhard Janse van Rensburg scored 27, Hansie de Villiers 13 and JW Visagie 10, and when Zacheo van Vuuren was dismissed for 10, Namibia were struggling at 72/5.

Captain Alex Volschenk and Ryan Moffett started a comeback, putting on 39 runs for the sixth wicket before Moffett was dismissed for 19.

Volschenk continued to lead Namibia’s revival, but when he was run out for 39 off 49 balls (1×6, 1×4), the whole side was soon out for 137 runs.

Shaikh Basha was Tanzania’s best bowler, with fine figures of three wickets for five runs off 10 overs, while Augustine Mwanele took 2/18 and Mohamed Mbaki 2/28.

In reply, Tanzania got off to a disastrous start as Namibia’s opening bowlers Junior Kariata and Jack Brassell scythed through their top order.

Kariata trapped Acrey Pascal lbw off the first ball of the innings, while five more wickets fell in quick succession as they crashed to six wickets down with only seven runs on the board.

Johnson Nyambo offered a bit of resistance, scoring 10 runs, before the whole team was out for a mere 33 runs, giving Namibia a commanding 104-run victory.

Brassel had great figures of three wickets for six runs off five overs, while Kariata took 2/7 off four overs, and Peter Daniel Blignaut took 2/3 off four overs.

In another match yesterday, Sierra Leone comfortably beat Nigeria by nine wickets. Nigeria were all out for 73 runs, with Sierra Leone reaching the target for the loss of just one wicket.

Namibia’s opening match against Uganda on Sunday was abandoned due to rain, as well as the match between Tanzania and Kenya.
