Namibian job market oversaturated, NIPDB launches information platform

The Namibian Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) says some career paths, such as education and nursing, are oversaturated, leaving many unemployed.

Speaking during the launch of its information sharing platform yesterday, NIPDB talent innovation and productivity executive director Julia Muetudhana said “there are more non-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem) graduates than stem graduates that are not employed.”

According to her, the sharing information platform was launched to provide a one-stop-shop for information on all bursaries, scholarships and funding opportunities.

“The platform will put all the opportunities across the country in one place for ease of access for individuals,” said Muetudhana, adding that opportunities will be both global and local.

She added that the platform makes it easier for those in rural areas who might not be able to afford to browse through different platforms to get information.

“Companies will submit information on available opportunities, which NIPDB will publish on the platform,” said Muetudhana

Applicants will apply through the links provided or as directed.

“NIPDB will not be responsible for the applications or the process,” she said.

Muetudhana said this will prevent people from keeping information within their circles and offer an equal opportunity to all Namibians.

The prototype of the platform was launched in May, and employers were asked to submit their opportunities to be placed on the platform.

Acting chief operations officer Johan Steenkamp says the platform will be managed by NIPDB, however, the opportunities posted will be from different organisations.

“This initiative is aimed at enhancing skills and education among the youth. Many young people face challenges when it comes to getting information on funding study opportunities,” says Steenkamp.

According to him, between 2021 and 2023, over 25 000 applicants have been turned down for funding.

Last year, 30 000 applications were received for funding, however, 9 900 were turned down.
