Namibian soldiers posted to rebel area

NAMIBIAN soldiers serving in the United Nations force in Liberia are to be deployed in an area that is currently occupied by the country’s largest and most powerful warring faction.

Deputy Commander of the UN force, Major-General Joseph Owonibi, told The News, a newspaper in Monrovia, that the Namibians would be deployed in Voinjama, ZorZor and Foya in the north-west of Liberia. The area is currently occupied by the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD).

Owonibi said the arrival of the Namibian contingent in Liberia had brought the number of international troops to 10 000, with more still expected to arrive.

LURD recently hit the headlines due to a dispute between leader Sekou Conneh and his wife Asha Keita-Conneh.

Keita-Conneh, an influential spirit medium long seen as a powerful force behind the rebel movement, announced she was replacing her husband as the group’s leader, saying his ambitions were threatening peace in Liberia.
