Namibians Nominated for Youth Magazine Awards

Namibians have once again been recognised by continental brand Scream Magazine for their 11th annual Scream Awards, an event highlighting and celebrating media personalities and creators across Africa.

This year’s local contenders include model Leena Shipwata for Screen personality of the year, DJ Kiki for DJ of the year, Miss Namibia 2023 Jameela Uiras for emerging celebrity, model Tina Haimbala for the positive initiative award, entrepreneur Zhahida Hoebes for most enterprising female youth, make up artists Beauty By Carita and Fluffy’s Artistry for the beauty and personal care brand award, and Celma Hamunyela’s Cina Hair for the hair brand award.

Shipwata (28) says being recognised for her talent outside of the country is exciting, because being nominated alongside some other big names is a sign that her work is being noticed.

“The nomination alone is a win for me. It’s wild, because sometimes you would not even think that people on the outside are watching you or that what you post on social media is reaching these people, but it is. I already have a good work ethic, but this is validating. I’m really excited and I hope that I get more nominations and wins. I’m really grateful for this,” she said.

DJ Kiki, known for keeping the vibes alive at some of Namibia’s hottest parties, tells us that she is honoured, as this is a beacon of hope for her and other women in her field, as well as for her people back home in Katima Mulilo.

“I never saw it coming. I woke up and there it was. I’d been handpicked by a panel within Africa for the best Dj award, and outside of Namibia’s borders; that in itself is an achievement worth celebrating,” the DJ of seven years says, adding that she is grateful for the support she has received.

More details of the West African youth award ceremony are still to come out, but fans of the nominees can vote for their favourites through the magazine’s social media platforms untill 30 April.

Each vote cast will cost N$4.
