Namibians wrestle way to medals in South Africa

THE South African Coastal Wrestling Championships were recently held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and Namibia entered a team of 60 wrestlers.

The teams that participated were Namibia, Western Province (WP), Eastern Province (EP), Boland and KwaZulu Natal. On day one, under the schools category, Namibia entered 44 wrestlers and won a total of eight gold, 20 silver and eight bronze medals.On the second day, which was for the President’s section, 33 wrestlers from Namibia entered and won eight gold, 10 silver and one bronze medals.Overall Namibia was in the third place missing second place with only nine points.Namibia only had 60 wrestlers in total compared to teams like WP and EP which had 150 wrestlers per team.Out of the Namibian team, a team of 27 wrestlers were chosen for the South African Schools’ Championships, which will be held in Benoni at the end of this month.This team will consist out of the following wrestlers: Marcelino Jaars, Jonathan Coetzee, Christo Pienaar, Duan Fourie, Kobus Oberholzer, Dawid Henning, Francois Botes, Lourens van Schalckwyk, Wildre Smith, Gerrit Steen, Daryl van Wyk, Gideon Nanub, Johan Retief, Louis v/d Westhuisen, Herman Namwandi, Andre Augustyn, Ingo Hokwana, Lukas Thomas, Jason Afrikaner, Barend Oberholzer, Gawie Vermeulen, Marius Hangue, Martin Lofty-Eaton, Cindy Hangue, Tusnelda Swartbooi, Christina Swartbooi and Sammy Luttig.The team will leave for the championships today.On day one, under the schools category, Namibia entered 44 wrestlers and won a total of eight gold, 20 silver and eight bronze medals.
