Namibia’s Congress of Democrats honours founding member Matroos, who died during election duty in Johannesburg

The Congress of Democrats (CoD) has described founding member Johannes Matroos as disciplined and loyal following his death in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Matroos was part of the delegation sent to South Africa by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) to observe the printing of election ballots for the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections.

In a statement, ECN chief electoral officer Peter Shaama said the day (30 October) he was scheduled to return from Johannesburg, Matroos was found unresponsive in his hotel room after he failed to appear for his scheduled transport to the airport.

CoD president Vaino Amuthenu told The Namibian yesterday the party received a message that Matroos had collapsed in his hotel room and was rushed to the hospital.

“We were told his condition was deteriorating and [he was not responding] to the medication,” he said.

He further said the CoD is saddened by Matroos’ death.

“Johannes’ departure leaves the party with a difficult task to fill the gap he occupied in the Khomas region and in the party leadership, as he was one of the national executive committee members,” said Amuthenu.

“We thank ECN for trying all they could to save the life of Johannes, but unfortunately God didn’t permit him to continue living with us,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shaama said the repatriation of Matroos’ body to Namibia will be arranged.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Matroos family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” he said.

“His loss is profoundly felt within our community and serves as a solemn reminder of the dedication and risks faced by those serving our nation,” added Shaama.
