Namibia’s National Assembly pays tribute to founding president Nujoma

The National Assembly (NA) has paid tribute to the late founding president, Sam Nujoma.

Nujoma died due to ill health after three weeks in a Windhoek hospital on Saturday.

“Nujoma’s extraordinary legacy as a revolutionary leader, anti-apartheid activist, and key figure in the establishment of Namibia’s constitutional democracy cannot be overstated,” reads a statement issued by the NA on Sunday.

The statement further reflects on Nujoma’s time as member of the Namibian Constituent Assembly from 1989 to 1990 and as the first president of Namibia from 1990 to 2005.

“He was integral in the processes that led to our nation’s independence and the establishment of the democratic framework that we continue to uphold today,” the statement reads.

A national mourning period and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
